Devil's Tollgate

Lookout tower at Taum Sauk State Park

Visit the highest mountain and the tallest waterfall in Missouri at
Taum Sauk Mountain State Park, only 20 minutes from the Log Cabin Inn!

Taum Sauk Mountain, in the St. Francois Mountain range of the Ozarks, was formed nearly 1.5 billion years ago, when violent volcanic eruptions threw hot ashes and gases in to the air. Interestingly, the majority of the Ozarks were once covered by seas, yet Taum Sauk Mountain and its neighbors close-by are different.  The mountain was formed by ancient, volcanic, Precambrian uplifts (many times older than the Appalachians) and was never submerged by ancient seas.

Walk just 1,000 feet on a paved path from the parking lot to to the elevation marker that will guide you to the 1,772 foot summit of Taum Sauk Mountain.  Don't stop there!  Hike on to Mina Sauk Falls, Missouri's tallest waterfall.  Be certain to read about the "Romeo and Juliet" style Indian legend of Mina Sauk Falls right here and learn how the falls got its name.

Just a mile down from the Taum Sauk section of the Ozark Trail is Devil's Tollgate, a passsage 50-feet long and 30-feet high on both sides.  This eight-foot wide passage is formed from volcanic rhyolite. See left.
